Downtown Gives $4,700 To First Book Sioux Falls
Wednesday, February 11, 2015
Downtown Sioux Falls, Inc. (DTSF) and several participating retailers celebrated the spirit of the 2014 holiday season with the Downtown Gives program, which is a collaborative effort of downtown business owners giving back to local charities. A check for just over $4,700 was presented yesterday to this year’s beneficiary, First Book - Sioux Falls.
DTSF received over 30 applications for this year’s program, which is a new record. 26 downtown retailers sold over 400 coupon books and participated in the first ever Downtown Gives Holiday Read event to promote children's literacy.
“This program's long-standing success shows just how much our downtown retailers value giving back to the community,” Brienne Maner, DTSF Communications Director said.
First Book - Sioux Falls provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy - access to books.
"Due to the generosity of DTSF this year, our organization will be able to award book grants of 1,586 new books to organizations that work with children who do not own books of their own," First Book Team Member Deb Weber said. "The members of our team were so pleased to be chosen as this year's beneficary - a chance to spread the love of reading through greater access to books. We would like to express our thanks for the generosity of the businesses who participated in this year’s campaign and also the people who supported the program by purchasing this year’s coupon books."
First Book - Sioux Falls will be holding a grant cycle in March to award the funds to local organizations for the purchase of books for the children they serve.
