Volunteers will host product drive for The Banquet as part of National Day of Service on Monday, January 19th
[Sioux Falls, SD]— For the third consecutive year, several Sioux Falls organizations are partnering to answer President Barack Obama’s call to action by participating in the National Day of Service on Monday, January 19. The organizations will once again be collecting feminine product donations for The Banquet, joining hundreds of thousands of Americans across the country in volunteer service.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities.
The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. DTSF and partnering organizations have planned a day of service that will leverage the strength of local citizens to help tackle local problems and advance Dr. King’s dream of opportunity for all.
The cause is inspired by a woman who had come into The Banquet with her husband and baby. She was in desperate need of feminine products, and was wearing her baby’s last diaper to get by.
“Unfortunately, feminine products end up as a luxury item in the lives of many women. They can be cost-prohibitive when you are prioritizing whether or not to spend your money on food or pads. This is a specific need, something we would like to bring to the attention of the public by way of this service drive,” Lehr-McKinney said.
In the past two years, the group has donated over 25,000 individually wrapped items to The Banquet.Several Sioux Falls organizations will step up to serve as volunteers on the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Volunteers will be collecting feminine products to stock the shelves of The Banquet, joining hundreds of thousands of Americans across the country in volunteer service.
