Trumpeter, composer, activist, and educator Alex Massa has spent the past 15 years living in Winnipeg, New Orleans, Chicago, and Iceland. In 2020, Massa returned to Rapid City, South Dakota to be part of the state’s vibrant and rapidly growing music and arts scene. In that time, Alex has remained busy with touring, local gigging, and concert composing/film score work. Most recently, Massa founded ‘Improvise Arts’, a performing arts and youth mentorship non-profit and has become Artistic Director for The South Dakota Jazz Orchestra.
To date, Massa has released nine albums, appeared on over 40 recordings with artists around the world, and performed with multiple esteemed artists and groups including The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, The Headhunters, Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra, TrumpetMafia, Nth Power, Samantha Fish, Nicholas Payton, Ellis Marsalis, Jason Marsalis, The Chicago Jazz Orchestra. Massa has founded two music festivals; Swamp Jam Music Fest in New Orleans, LA & Plays Well With Others Fest in the Black Hills of South Dakota; created a record label with a focus on talent from the Great Plains and the midwest, and is active in their work as an advocate for water rights.
Massa’s ‘TRIO’ trio features Alex Diaz (Miami) on upright bass and Jamin Hubner (Rapid City) on drums & cymbals. They will also be joined by guest cellist, vocalist, and all-around goofball Jon Bakken, with a LIVE PAINTING by the infamous Jen White!
