Batcheller: Thank You for 9 Years of Working Together for a Better Downtown

October 10, 2024

Closing a Chapter

As most of you know, I have decided to step down as President of Downtown Sioux Falls, Inc. at the end of the year to pursue other professional opportunities. It has been such an honor to serve this remarkable community since 2015. Over the past nine years, we have seen extraordinary growth, faced challenges, and achieved milestones together that I will always hold dear.

When I first began this journey, Downtown Sioux Falls was on the path to revitalization, but the potential for even greater success was undeniable. Together, we worked to transform that potential into a reality. Today, downtown is more vibrant, welcoming, and prosperous than ever before. Our shared efforts have created a thriving destination that draws visitors from near and far, supports a diverse range of businesses, and serves as a source of pride for the entire city.

Retrospective

Economic Growth

We have seen an impressive increase in the number of new businesses opening their doors, filling previously vacant spaces, and contributing to the local economy. Property values have increased 92% and provide more tax revenue per acre than any other part of Sioux Falls. Residents have grown 71% and will soon surpass 4,000. Employment has increased 5.6%. Foot traffic has increased 17%.

Enhanced Public Spaces

The investments we’ve made in public art, green spaces, and pedestrian-friendly areas have redefined the downtown experience. Pilot projects have led to permanent improvements, like the Kirby Dog Park and streetscape enhancements, as well as nearly triple the number of flower baskets.

Abundant Cultural Offerings

Events like Block Parties, Art & Wine Walk, and Burger Battle bring thousands of people into the heart of our city. These events have helped boost economic activity, spur on other events and cultural offers, like our phenomenal culinary scene, and strengthened the sense of community that makes Downtown so special.

Increased Impact

DTSF has adapted and grown in anticipation of our changing downtown and in response to stakeholder needs. The addition of the Ambassador Program has made Downtown a cleaner, friendlier, and safer place for everyone to experience, everyday. By all measures, our impact has increased year-over-year, providing stakeholders a 5-to-1 return on investment in 2023, up 143% from 2016.

Strategic Partnerships

None of this would have been possible without the strong relationships we built with business owners, property owners, and city leaders. Together, we navigated complex projects, implemented key initiatives, and advocated for policies that have fostered long-term growth and sustainability.

A New Chapter

Our success belongs to all of us. Each of you has played a vital role in making Downtown Sioux Falls a destination where businesses can thrive, residents can enjoy a high quality of life, and visitors can experience the best of what our city has to offer.

While it’s hard to say goodbye, I know that the future of Downtown Sioux Falls is bright. The organization is well-positioned to continue driving progress, and I have full confidence in the leadership team and community to keep this momentum going.

Thank you for your trust, your collaboration, and your dedication. It has been an absolute privilege and honor to serve Downtown Sioux Falls. I will always cherish the memories and accomplishments we’ve shared. I’m eternally grateful!
