MCHS 3rd Thursday History Talk in March, free and open to the public. Margaret Novak and members of the Minnehaha County Abandoned Cemeteries Board will present a power point on the history and future of the county abandoned cemeteries which they oversee.
In 16 abandoned cemeteries throughout Minnehaha County, several hundred grave sites serve as reminders of our beginnings. The County Commission appoints a board to manage the abandoned cemeteries. The Board regulates and maintains the abandoned cemeteries by mowing and cutting of weeds and grass, repairing of fences and corrective measures related to grave markers (SDCL 9-12-18). A handful of dedicated volunteers, they can always use help and donations to care for these hallowed grounds.
