Welcome to the Dog Days of Summer

A guide to enjoying Downtown Sioux Falls with your four-legged best friend

You know it’s summer in Sioux Falls when every stroll through downtown feels like a dog parade. Whether it’s a poodle lounging under a patio table or a Bernese mountain dog trotting proudly beside its owner, Downtown Sioux Falls is all for the dogs.

If you’re a dog lover, there’s no better place to spend sunny days than downtown. With walkable streets, dog-friendly patios, pet-welcoming shops, and parks around every corner, this urban playground is perfect for spending quality time with your furry companion.

In this blog, we’ll show you where to sip, shop, stroll, and snack with your dog all summer long. From morning coffee runs to late-night patio hangs, here’s how to make the most of downtown with your dog in tow.

Dog-Friendly Dining

Many downtown eateries are rolling out the welcome mat (and the water bowls) for pups on patios. Popular spots like Queen City Bakery, Coffea, Remedy Brewing Co., and Fernson Downtown, just to name a few, not only serve up great food and drink, but also offer outdoor spaces where your dog is free to relax with you.

Some even go the extra mile with dog treats or a bowl of fresh water brought right to your table. During the warm months, patio culture thrives in downtown Sioux Falls—and dogs are absolutely part of the scene.

While most places downtown are pet friendly, some are not, so just be sure to double check if you aren’t sure and respect different business rules.

Coffee Shops That Welcome Dogs

A morning coffee run is better with a leash in hand. Several downtown coffee shops, including The Breaks, The Source, La Luna Café, and Coffea, offer cozy patios perfect for enjoying your brew of choice while your pup people-watches.

While policies can vary, most cafés even allow dogs inside, and usually have welcoming treats to go with it. So grab your favorite drink and hit the pavement—it’s the perfect start to any morning or afternoon with your pup.

Retail Spots That Allow Dogs

Don’t be surprised to see a happy pup peeking out from behind the checkout counter—many local shops in downtown Sioux Falls are dog-friendly. The Tail That Got Away is an obvious favorite, offering treats, gear, and a welcoming atmosphere for pets.

Other locally owned boutiques often welcome dogs inside too. Look for spots that keep a treat jar by the register or have a water bowl just outside their door—it’s a sign your four-legged shopping partner is just as welcome as you are.

As always, it’s courteous to ask first, but downtown business owners are used to these questions and always appreciate them.

Dog Parks and Runs Near Downtown

When it’s time to burn off some energy, there are great off-leash options nearby. Kirby Dog Park on the corner of 10th and 2nd Ave is just a short drive or walk away, featuring plenty of space for your pup to run free. Kirby Dog Park is two-sided, one for bigger dogs and one for the smaller pups. Closer in, you’ll find green space and sniff-worthy paths at Falls Park, Levitt at the Falls and along the River Walk.

There are also dog runs located throughout downtown including at Cherapa Place and The Steele District. Don’t forget to clean up after your pet, follow leash etiquette, and make use of the convenient waste stations provided on site.

Walkability for You and Your Pup

One of the biggest perks of Downtown Sioux Falls is how easy it is to walk. The compact layout makes it ideal for quick loops or long meanders, whether you’re on a morning mission or just soaking up golden hour.

Popular routes include a stroll on Phillips of the Sculpture Walk, or up to Falls Park for some waterfall views. Downtown also has several easy access points to the Bike Trails which make for a great stroll for you and your dog. Many areas offer public water fountains, shaded areas, and benches to take a break.

Pet-Friendly Events & Community

Keep an eye on local calendars for dog-friendly happenings like outdoor markets such as Open Streets, and live music events like AMPT 2025 where dogs are welcome. These gatherings are great chances to meet other dog lovers and enjoy the community atmosphere that makes downtown so special.

Downtown Sioux Falls isn’t just a great place to explore—it’s a place where dogs and their people feel right at home. With its welcoming businesses, walkable streets, and vibrant community, it’s easy to see why pups love it here as much as we do.

So leash up, get out there, and start making summer memories with your best furry friend.

Free. Live. Local. AMPT 2025 Is Here.

Starting this June and running through the end of August, AMPT (Art, Music & Performance Theatre) returns for its third season—bringing sound and energy to the streets of Downtown Sioux Falls. Happening every Thursday through Sunday at four unique downtown locations, AMPT will feature 80 free performances throughout the summer, making downtown the place to be for music, art, and community atmosphere.

The Locations

AMPT will take place at four iconic downtown spots: Phillips Avenue Plaza, the Jones421 Building, Cherapa Place, and Lloyd Landing at the newly completed Steel District. These venues span across the core of downtown, integrating live performances into the daily rhythm of the city.

Every Thursday at Cherapa Place, you’ll find a lunchtime concert paired with a rotating food truck. Whether you’re on your lunch break or just exploring downtown, it’s the perfect excuse to enjoy great music and a local bite. With different artists and food vendors each week, no two Thursdays will be the same.

The Performances

Performance times vary by location:

  • Thursday: Cherapa Place | 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM
  • Friday: Phillips Avenue Plaza | 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM
  • Saturday: Phillips Avenue Plaza, Lloyd Landing, & Jones421 Building | 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM
  • Sunday: Phillips Avenue Plaza | 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM

AMPT is designed to be flexible and inviting—you can swing by for a midday break or wind down with an evening set. With a mix of venues and times, there’s always a way to fit live music into your summer routine.

The Performers

This year’s lineup showcases a wide range of local and regional musicians, spanning genres and styles. But AMPT isn’t just about music—other creative expressions will take the stage too, like live speed graffiti artists and more.

Building on the momentum from last year, DTSF has doubled the number of performances—from 40 to 80. And that growth isn’t slowing down. The goal for future seasons is not only to expand the number of performances, but also to include a broader variety of art forms to reflect the creativity and diversity of our community.

Powered by Community Support

AMPT 2025 is made possible through the generous support of Xcel Energy and Lloyd, whose commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) helps drive the vision behind the series. This funding not only brings music to the streets of Downtown Sioux Falls, but also uplifts artists—especially those who have long been part of the scene and those just beginning to find their voice. The goal is twofold: to grow AMPT as a centerpiece of the downtown arts and culture landscape, and to further support performers through expanded opportunities and meaningful financial investment. With the continued support of our sponsors and community, AMPT aims to be even bigger and more inclusive in 2026 and beyond.

Interested in Performing?

Are you a performer looking for a chance to share your talent with the Sioux Falls community? We’d love to hear from you! AMPT is always on the lookout for new voices—whether you’re a seasoned artist or just starting out. Summer events will bring new walkable areas to downtown Sioux Falls

With a block of Phillips Avenue designated as pedestrians-only for three hours, a captive audience became customers for nearby MatchBox Candle Co.

“It was a constant flow through here,” said Steve Nosbush, who worked that night to help his son, Jeremy, the store’s co-owner.

“I’m at the store a lot more this year, and I see the patterns. With apartments and development down by Falls Park, a lot more people are coming this way from that direction. But having the street blocked off was very beneficial.”

Downtown Sioux Falls Inc.’s First Friday event in May was the second time Phillips Avenue was designated as pedestrians-only between Ninth and 10th streets, coinciding with Art & Wine Walk events. Both times, the candle and gift store saw a noticeable bump in business.

“Sales were definitely up,” Nosbush said. “I was pouring the wine, and my daughter was running the till, and it was a constant stream. The street event definitely helps. It’s free, and it gets people’s eyes focused on an area.”

That’s the whole idea, said Brandon Hanson, CEO of Downtown Sioux Falls Inc.

“We care about walkability, and we’re using this to promote a pedestrian-friendly downtown,” he said. “We want to test what happens if we connect our subdistricts with active programming. Do we spread foot traffic and convince people to stay longer? Our research says this should happen.”

This summer, Downtown Sioux Falls Inc. will hold free Open Streets programming for four events on the first Friday of each month from May through August.

The First Friday in May featured special activities in the pedestrians-only area such as live music, art and a curling demonstration. Upcoming events include:

  • June 6 – Community in Motion, Phillips from Sixth to Seventh streets: This Open Streets activation is all about movement, wellness and community connection.
  • July 4 – Red, White and Downtown, Phillips from Sixth to Seventh streets: Celebrate the Fourth of July downtown! In partnership with Levitt at the Falls, stop by July’s Open Streets on your way to the show.
  • Aug. 1 – Art & Wine Walk, Phillips from 10th to 11th streets: Stop by this Open Streets activation on the way to participating Art & Wine Walk locations.

The Open Streets initiative was sparked by conversations among City Council members, led by Jennifer Sigette and Ryan Spellerberg. Both regularly patronize downtown businesses and wanted to encourage people to visit and walk around while cutting down on noise from vehicles and motorcycles revving engines.

With support from the Sioux Falls Police Department, the concept for the Open Streets initiative came together.

“I thought the event in May was a good start. I talked to a lot of the people who came out, and all seemed to really appreciate the concept and were having a good time,” Sigette said. “I would expect that as word spreads they will get busier each month.”

Spellerberg agreed.

“We really wanted to do this,” he said. “It’s fun to see something you’re involved in happen for the city. I’m very supportive of it. We go to different cities, and this is common to have your downtown more walkable. So we’re testing it in area for First Friday to see what the feedback is and if people like it.”

AARP South Dakota shared the vision of Downtown Sioux Falls Inc. and the city of Sioux Falls to make downtown even more walkable, safe and business-friendly. The Open Streets initiative builds on the momentum of past efforts such as last summer’s Lively and Beautiful Streets traffic-calming project, which helped set the stage for reimagining how streets can serve the community.

“We were extremely pleased with the May Open Streets event,” said Erik Gaikowski, state director for AARP.

“When we do activities like this, being available to listen to participants is a very important component. In talking with attendees at our AARP SD booth, we heard great feedback about what brings people downtown and what activities they enjoy, but more importantly how much they appreciated the focus on pedestrian safety and ensuring that our public spaces are accessible to people of all ages and abilities.”

The organization is hoping these events allow people to see “how to reimagine public spaces,” he added, as pedestrian-friendliness and safety are prioritized and social connections are enhanced.

“From listening to attendees and business owners, we know there is interest in seeing this kind of opportunity elsewhere in the community – whether that is in other areas of downtown or in other neighborhoods. This can also be a model that other communities across the state could follow,” Gaikowski said.

“After the great experience in May, we are so excited for the remainder of the Open Streets series. As we look ahead to June, we know there will be fun for all ages to engage in activities like pickleball, yoga and games with Parks & Rec. This will be a fantastic opportunity for different age generations to come together and connect, play, move and enjoy our community.”

Initial data shows that Open Streets helps generate increased activity. During the first pedestrian event last October, foot traffic increased 92 percent compared with another Friday that month and the same time one year ago.

“Dwell time” went from 89 minutes the previous year to 155 minutes during the Open Streets event.

“That’s what’s driving activity for businesses,” Hanson said.

“Additionally, 95 percent of people surveyed reported an increased sense of safety, and 78 percent discovered a new business downtown. It’s a great way to show unity downtown and expose people to areas they haven’t discovered yet.”

If the data supports it, the program could expand, Sigette said.

“I’m hoping the data we gather reflects increased sales for our downtown retailers and attendees share that they had a positive experience and would frequent downtown more during Open Street events,” she said. “If this is what data shows, I will work with stakeholders to discuss expanding Open Streets to more weekends in coming years.”

Why pay to park? Downtown business owners explain

The last thing Jeff Danz thought was a good idea when he opened Zandbroz Variety on Phillips Avenue 36 years ago was asking customers to pay for parking to shop at his store.

“I was ready to campaign for the removal of parking meters,” he said. “Back then, we heard a lot of complaints about parking from customers — now, we rarely do. I think the difference is downtown has evolved into a place they want to be.”

But the success of downtown also means more people are drawn there – to live, work, shop, dine and be entertained. Combine the increase in residents, workers and visitors with human nature “to seek the most convenient and easy way to do anything” and it’s not surprising what Danz now sees out his store window when parking is free.

“Lots of people work downtown, and they will park in the most convenient place, making the space unavailable for the day,” he said, adding that after 5 p.m. is when he sees the greatest demand for parking downtown because spaces aren’t forced to turn over through parking enforcement.

His experience meant “it didn’t take long for me to realize that without meters, there would be no available parking,” he said. “Many of us have been asking to extend the hours to keep the cost per hour from escalating, as well as increasing turnover and availability.”

Downtown Sioux Falls Inc., on behalf of its membership, led the way in recent weeks in supporting several city-related changes to parking. Rates now will be enforced from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday as well as Monday through Friday, and a new text-to-pay system will make it convenient for customers to pay and monitor their space to avoid fines.

“As these changes approached, DTSF made it a priority to reconnect with as many affected business owners as possible to ensure the enhancements were still aligned with their needs,” said Brandon Hanson, CEO of Downtown Sioux Falls Inc.

“In those conversations, we heard consistent themes: Business owners want the most convenient street spaces reserved for paying customers, current parking conditions are negatively impacting business, and the issue of ‘cruising ’— circling the block searching for parking — continues to be a barrier. Some even shared that an open spot in front of their store was the reason a customer decided to walk in. Others expressed that this change has been a long time coming, and it’s encouraging to finally see movement on something that’s been discussed for years.”

There’s significant research on the topic too. According to the International Downtown Association, an effectively managed parking system should turn over on-street spaces roughly five to seven times daily.

“In an unmanaged or improperly managed system, by comparison, on-street spaces turn over less than twice a day,” the organization said in a report. “The difference can aggregate to thousands of retail customers per day in a downtown retail area.”

In downtown Sioux Falls, it’s not uncommon to see people pay for one hour at 4 p.m. and then leave a vehicle there all night, overnight or even through a weekend, multiple downtown business owners said.

“People park and plant,” said Greg Koch, who owns 605 Running Co. and whose family owns The Cookie Jar Eatery.

“For a long time, people have wondered why some businesses don’t stay open later, and it’s because once parking is all free at the meters, people claim spots on Phillips on the evenings and weekends and retail business suffers. Your foot traffic disappears, and people who might pop in and out to grab an essential item or pick up a carryout order are not able to get there.”

“Expanding the hours creates more turnover and availability of prime parking spots,” Danz said. “I’ve been advocating for these changes for many years and am pleased to see they are finally being implemented.”

As downtown becomes more of a destination, while parking close to your destination always is a plus, it’s also “not as critical as it once was,” he added. “With the lots and ramps, you can park within a block or two of anywhere downtown. SculptureWalk, the streetscape and many restored historic building have made walking downtown a pleasant experience.”

Parking will be free after 5 p.m. weekdays and all day Saturday and Sunday in ramps throughout downtown, including those open to the public at The Steel District and Cherapa Place. There also are a number of surface parking lots without meters that can be used for free.

David Doxtad, president of ISG, chairs the DTSF Development Council and decided to get a first-hand look at what it’s like to use the ramps.

“My wife and I come down regularly for dinner, and I said, ‘For a whole year whenever we come down, we’re only going to park in a ramp,’” he said. “At first, she wasn’t sure about it, but I said, ‘You’re going to be surprised.’ We got through six months and she looked and me and said, ‘We’re literally the only people parking in these massive ramps.’ There are all these spaces available, and they’re so close, and they’re covered. It’s actually a better stall.”

In talking with businesses, “they want the turnover too,” he said.

“They want someone to come into the business or businesses and keep moving along and open up that spot for others, which is great. I’ve had a couple different conversations in which restaurants have pushed back, but it’s really something that should benefit them by creating turnover. Most people don’t spend longer than two hours at an establishment, and if you are going to make a night of it, there’s still so many options for free parking nearby.”

There are at least 4,000 spaces available in public or city-owned downtown ramps, plus additional surface lots that bring the total closer to 12,000 when including available private ramps and surface lots, according to DTSF.

“There’s tons of excellent parking downtown. It’s a huge myth that there’s not, especially in comparison to other cities,” Koch said. “If you park at Sam’s Club or Walmart or Costco, you’re likely going to do the same amount of walking as you will from a free parking space downtown to wherever you’re going.”

Doxtad’s firm, which works in many regional communities, has seen similar approaches be successful.

“Everybody looks at it like restricting parking is going to limit people downtown, and that is just not what we see,” he said. “Once you restrict it in your highest-need times, it’s actually very well received once people get used to it.”

For those who are fearful of walking to a ramp or parking lot, Downtown Sioux Falls Inc.’s ambassador program offers to walk with anyone for free. It’s staffed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily — and DTSF is still hiring for the program, so click here to apply.

“The more people who use the ramps, the busier they get and the more safe it is because there are more people around,” Hanson added.

DTSF has spent years building consensus to advocate for extended parking enforcement, and that has been especially true in recent months.

Input has involved everything from surveys online to working through multiple advisory boards, the retail roundtable and one-on-one outreach to businesses. The issue also is included in the Horizon 2035 downtown master plan.

The whole idea “is to produce turnover at the curb, which ultimately produces more foot traffic and more sales,” Hanson said. “It’s a very business-friendly approach to actively manage parking.”

With new shuttle and special offers, Downtown Sioux Falls hopes Summit League will be slam dunk for small businesses

As tens of thousands of college basketball fans descend on Sioux Falls, the locally owned business of downtown Sioux Falls are stepping up their own game.

“Our relationship with The Summit League Basketball Championships has deepened this year,” said Brandon Hanson, CEO of Downtown Sioux Falls Inc. “You’ll see banners up throughout downtown, welcome posters in the businesses and lots of participation districtwide because we expect at least 38,000 people in town, and we want them downtown.”

For the first time, Downtown Sioux Falls Inc. in partnership with sponsor Lloyd Cos. will run a free shuttle from the Denny Sanford Premier Center to downtown, with stops at The Steel District on the north end of downtown and Blarney Stone Pub on the south end.

“It will be 30 minutes round trip, and it’s a large charter bus, so it’s going to be hard to miss,” Hanson said. “We’ll have signage out at the stopping points and will be giving away Downtown Gives coupon books while they last and additional perks to those taking the shuttle.”

Once the shuttle pulls into The Steel District, visitors can prepare to be amazed by the transformation.

“Even if they’ve come to the tournament in prior years, this is a destination that will be completely new to them this time,” said Christie Ernst, president of property management for Lloyd Cos.

“We’re excited to help connect these visitors with so many new shopping, dining and entertainment options at The Steel District along with the broader downtown, including The Cascade boardwalk, which just welcomed The Maker’s Circle, offering work from nearly two dozen area artists.”

Expect to see the games on at Big Sioux Burger, which offers everything from classic breakfast dishes much of the day to destination burgers.

Unwind with a late-night DJ on the weekend at Dahlia Kitchen + Bar or indulge in a fine-dining experience at Ironwood.

“We’re also excited to welcome tournament guests to the Canopy by Hilton, our brand-new hotel, which also has outstanding on-site dining at Cascata Italian Cuisine,” Ernst said. “Plus, you’ll love new local shopping like Pasque Boutique and Alcove, a museum store from the Washington Pavilion.”

The Washington Pavilion also is offering 20 percent off at Alcove, excluding fine art, by showing a Summit League ticket when making a purchase, along with:

  • 20 percent off museum admissions for the Kirby Science Discovery Center and Visual Arts Center.
  • 20 percent off tickets to the Sweetman Planetarium.
  • 20 percent off The WP Cafe and Parlour ice cream.

Plus, for March Madness, Parlour is featuring a new flavor. The Final Four is chocolate ice cream paired with Twix, cookie dough, brownie chunks and a caramel swirl that’s colored orange.

“We can’t wait to welcome Summit League fans to the Washington Pavilion and Alcove, and treat them to some incredible experiences,” said Cameron Ostrom, chief revenue officer for Washington Pavilion Management Inc..

“Downtown will be the place to head between games, and we have all your needs covered with museums, movies, ice cream and more.”

As visitors venture throughout downtown, it will become clear that businesses are ready to welcome them.

Terra Shepherd Boutique & Apothecary has decorated its windows for the event as a hint of what awaits inside.

“This tournament brings so much energy, and the downtown community can’t wait to roll out the red carpet for tournament participants, fans and staff,” owner Sara Jamison said.

“We are ready and so excited!”

In her store, tournament-goers will receive a discount with a game ticket, plus the boutique is partnering with Mary’s Mountain Cookies to provide cookies, plus award a special gift to the first fan sporting gear from a participating team. Girl Scout Cookies also will be for sale from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

“It’s a huge opportunity for our small businesses, and I am really glad we are stepping up this year,” Jamison said. “The shuttle is such a fun and functional addition as well. It’s a perfect opportunity to brunch, grab coffee and shop downtown, then have someone else do the driving for you. I think being able to get dropped off right at the door at the Premier Center is such a cool perk! Then, folks can end their evening with dinner, dessert and drinks from one of our amazing restaurants.”

Those who want a true culinary experience also can sign up for a Sioux Falls Food Tour. Owner Dana Wohlwend is offering a discount and will be running two to three routes depending on interest from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

“I will give the visitors a look into our exciting culinary culture as well as a brief history on Sioux Falls,” Wohlwend said. “With such a short time in town, they will experience seven to nine different establishments and a refreshing time.”

The shuttle also makes it easy and safe to participate in the expanded Mash Madness downtown, in which more than 30 cafes, bars and restaurants are competing for the best beer, cocktail or nonalcoholic beverage. Click here for details.

Need to let off some steam after watching the games? Rough Cut Social is offing 25 percent off one-hour admissions for Summit League goers today through Saturday. Use the promo code SUMMIT25 for online reservations.

“We do take walk-ins as well, and they just need to mention the Summit Special to get the discount,” general manager Alysia Simunek said.

“The Summit League attendees and fans are a great crowd for axe throwing. We can keep the competitive energy flowing with some friendly axe-throwing battles.”

Fans of all ages are welcome, she said.

“Plus, it’s the best stress relief for those court frustrations like missed shots, bad calls, close games or unexpected outcomes. We even welcome the teams to join us for some connection and fun off the court.”

Other downtown businesses with special offers include:

  • Mary’s Mountain Cookies: Enjoy frosted sugar “basketball” cookies, plus the buy-six, get-two-free daily special.
  • The Cattitude Cafe:  $1 off hour catroom entrance fees.
  • Harvester Kitchen by Bryan:  Nunzio’s Food Hall to-go pizzas will feature a special pie for Summit League guests. The Meatball features meatballs made with veal, pork and beef, along with San Marzano tomato sauce, a three-cheese blend and crust made in house.
  • Lauriebelles:  20 percent off purchase with Summit League ticket.
  • MK Threads: Make a free throw for discounts.
  • Pasque Boutique: Summit League guests receive $10 off permanent jewelry pieces and 10 percent off in-store sales.

“Every business I’ve talked to downtown in recent weeks is so excited by the opportunity to welcome our Summit League guests,” said Hanson of DTSF. “There’s no reason not to do it. They’re doing giveaways and gift cards and customized products. You’ll see a lot of folks downtown wearing Summit League gear. It goes beyond making sales. They’re all just really excited to have people in the community and welcome them in.”

Ready to discover something new downtown? Head north.

Want a taste of what awaits in downtown Sioux Falls’ growing Uptown area?

Think gourmet cookies, chef-driven sandwiches, one-of-a-kind gifts and new arrivals all the time.

“We just had our three-year anniversary in December and still hear from people who weren’t aware of us being downtown, and they’re always amazed when they find us,” said Becky McElroy, who opened a Sioux Falls Mary’s Mountain Cookies with her husband, Dave, in the boardwalk at the Cascade building — 701 N. Phillips Ave.

“They don’t know the Cascade or all this development exists. We know about it. We know about The Steel District, and it’s all over the news, but people still don’t realize how much has changed.”

This weekend — and the rest of the month — is a great time to venture downtown and make sure you head north while you’re there.

The semi-annual Winter Crazy Days: Shop & Stroll runs Jan. 17-20 featuring special offers at more than two dozen participating retailers.

For the first time, Mary’s Mountain Cookies is among them.

“I thought I’d give it and try and we’ll see how people respond,” McElroy said. “We’ll be doing prize drawings for gift card each day and then a larger one at the end for everyone who entered.”

Plus, take advantage of a daily special: Buy six gourmet cookies, get two free.

There are more than 20 flavors, including seasonal rotations such as the featured molasses,  raspberry cheesecake, mint grinch and peppermint panda.

“Overall we were up 20 percent last year, so we were happy and thankful and grateful,” McElroy said. “People are realizing we’re here, they love our cookies and they are coming back again and again.”

Other downtown retailers in the Uptown area also will be experiencing their first Crazy Days event.

Find them at The Steel District by taking Phillips Avenue north to Fourth Street and then turning east.

“People are still discovering us, which is fun to see,” said Alicia Engelking, owner of Basque Boutique, which is located in the first floor of The Steel District’s apartment and condominium building at 151 E. 4th Place.

“Every week I hear ‘I didn’t know all this was here.’ Activity is increasing, especially on weekends.”

Her boutique features a range of women’s apparel and accessories along with permanent jewelry and gift items.

“We are really excited about our spring line that is coming in. We have a couple of brands that aren’t carried anywhere else arriving and we are excited to see how they do,” Engelking said. “Hopefully, everyone loves the items as much as I do.”

The store will offer “Denim Days” all week including Crazy Days, with 20 percent off all denim in store and online, plus 10 percent off permanent jewelry and a freshly stocked sale rack.

Mark your calendar for Feb. 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. when the boutique will host a “Galentine’s Day” event with drinks, music, permanent jewelry and 15 percent off the whole store.

“For those who aren’t familiar with Galentine’s it’s meant to celebrate female friendships and to encourage us to support and uplift each other,” Engelking said. “We are hoping for a great turnout — it will be a fun event.”

Alcove, a retail store from the Washington Pavilion, is located next to Pasque Boutique and will be offering 40 percent off select items during this week’s Crazy Days, along with soda, wine beer and snack mix.

“The inventory at Alcove is always changing,” said Meghan Knight, retail operations manager. “So there are lots of new things in such as speakers, drink ware, books and more.”

“People are still continuing to discover us, and we know that will only continue as the Steel District evolves,” Knight said.

Don’t forget the dining

The north side of downtown also has delicious reasons to check out the area.

You’ll find a dozen restaurants north of Sixth Street participating in the Downtown Burger Battle through Jan. 31. One of them is Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen, which is featuring a sweet chili bacon cheeseburger made with 5-spice bacon, house-made sweet chili sauce, miso cream cheese and winter greens between a Look’s Bakehouse sesame seed bun.

“Burger Battle surprisingly continues to just keep going up, which is kind of wild,” co-owner Barry Putzke said. “You think with more restaurants it would dilute itself, but there’s more excitement every year and so far this year we’re at record sales pace with back-to-back Saturdays with record-breaking single-day sales, so that’s exciting and I’ve heard similar things from our friends at other restaurants.”

When Bread & Circus opened in 2017, it was among few retailers and restaurants on downtown’s north side. The opening of Levitt at the Falls brought more activity, and now the Steel District and Jacobson Plaza are set to bring more people, he said.

“We’re definitely able to tell it’s a more frequented area now than it used to be,” Putzke said.

“Burger Battle is a great example of a time for people who might venture downtown and discover new places. With the Steel District restaurants opening, I’ve gone and looked around the dining rooms and didn’t recognize people, so I’m very excited for the hotel to get filled up and have people wander around. I’m all for it — bring on the competition, anything to bring more people to the area I think is good.”

10 Best Practices for Enjoying the Downtown Sioux Falls Burger Battle 🍔

The Downtown Sioux Falls Burger Battle is one of the most anticipated events of the year, celebrating culinary creativity, community spirit, and our incredible local restaurants. If you’re planning to dive into the battle and try the city’s best burger creations, here’s a list of tips to help you make the most of it—while showing appreciation for the hardworking service industry making it all possible.

1. Start Early in the Month
Don’t wait until the last week to begin your burger journey! Starting early ensures you can visit more restaurants and avoid the crowds that tend to build toward the end of January.

2. Plan Ahead
Check the list of participating restaurants and their burger entries on the DTSF website. Map out your stops, and consider spreading them across several outings. This way, you’ll have time to enjoy the experience without rushing.

3. Dine During Off-Peak Hours
Visiting during non-peak times (like weekday afternoons) helps avoid long waits and reduces stress on restaurant staff. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy your meal in a more relaxed atmosphere.

4. Be Patient
Restaurants experience higher-than-usual traffic during the Burger Battle. Service might take a little longer, so show patience and kindness to staff working hard to deliver a great experience.

5. Tip Generously
Servers, cooks, and bartenders put in extra effort during events like these. A generous tip is a great way to show your appreciation for their hard work and dedication.

6. Share the Experience
Bring friends or family to split burgers and try more entries in one outing. It’s a fun way to compare flavors and explore creative burger combinations while supporting multiple restaurants.

7. Engage with Staff
Take a moment to thank your server, chat with the host, or compliment the chefs (when possible). A little kindness goes a long way in lifting up the people behind the scenes.

8. Leave Honest Reviews
When you vote, consider all aspects: taste, creativity, and presentation. Constructive feedback helps restaurants grow and inspires them to bring their best creations year after year.

9. Share on Social Media
Snap photos, tag the restaurants, and use hashtags like #BurgerBattle and #DTSF. Your posts not only promote the event but also shine a spotlight on the talented chefs and teams behind each creation.

10. Respect Restaurant Policies
Be mindful of seating times, reservations, and group size limitations. Following the rules makes everything smoother for both diners and staff.

Enjoy the Battle—and Celebrate the Industry!
The Burger Battle is more than a competition; it’s a celebration of the incredible service industry that makes Downtown Sioux Falls such a vibrant place. By following these best practices, you’ll not only enjoy amazing burgers but also contribute to a positive experience for everyone involved.
Cheers to great food, great people, and great community vibes! 🏆
