Meet Me at the Jones

The baristas know your coffee order, the shop owners wave hello, and you have an unofficial assigned seat. Let’s face it, you’re a regular.

This is the place you go when you need to get past that block at work, grab lunch with colleagues, or just to see a familiar face.

As DTSF’s Membership Coordinator, I spend a lot of time downtown. For me, that familiar place is the Jones 421 Marketplace. This is my field guide on how to spend a day here. (it’ll be so easy, I promise)

Start off strong with some shots (of espresso). Let’s head to The Source for a latte. My go-to recently has been the Cafe Miel. Didn’t sleep well last night? Toss in an extra shot, I usually do. I could spend an entire day here alone, coffee AND craft beer?  Two of my favorite things.

It’s easy to find a spot that fits your needs. Common areas are spread throughout the horseshoe shaped building. You can usually find me at a tall table tucked in the corner sipping on my latte, listening to some eclectic playlist Spotify has weirdly nailed, and plugging away on my computer.

Browse Sharing the Dream in Guatemala and 605 Florista, a partnership of two businesses,. It’s a one stop shop for all of your gifting needs! You will usually find Ariana from 605 Florista creating bouquets and centerpieces galore. Ask her anything about the plant you’re actively trying not to kill at home, and I’m sure she’d be able to talk you through what you’re doing wrong.

When it’s time to break for lunch, you’ve  got some options.

Brosia Bowl is the newest restaurant at Jones 421 and is THE place to grab a fresh, plant based meal. My favorite is the Tuscan artichoke salad. Next on the list for me to try is the creamy coconut curry. In the warmer months you can also find them in their food truck providing a fresh bite at several downtown events.

Another great option is Flying Santo Taco Bar. After watching them make fresh corn tortillas, I’ll  never be able to enjoy store bought again. I recommend building your own tacos. It’s tempting to dive right in, but be sure to grab a photo of this lunch masterpiece in front of their bedazzled mural. It’s hard to miss!

Just down the hall is Interiors Etc. This is the place where your Pinterest boards become a reality, and where I dream of all the ways I can redesign my living space. Mary Kelly started her business in 1975. Her son Richard followed in her interior design footsteps. When he moved back to Sioux Falls they opened up shop in Jones 421.

At some point in the day it would be impossible not to stop into Henna Harvest and chat with Anndell. She’s been doing henna for 16 years, traveling to festivals, comic cons and retreats. We could chat for hours about our favorite downtown shops, art, and their next seasonal market.

The Jones businesses began collaborating on these in December of 2022. Artists rent a table, patrons can enjoy a coffee or beer, a bite to eat, live music, and buy from some of Sioux Falls best.

“I wanted to support local artists in our community and create an event that would get people into Uptown (Downtown) Sioux Falls to see everything that this area has to offer. At the same time, I would also be creating an atmosphere where locals could come support artists and makers from their very own community. ”
  • Andell, owner of Henna Harvest

After an afternoon of browsing, it’s dinner time!

One thing is for sure on the menu: Swamp Daddy’s. Inkka and her team bring the flavors of Louisiana to Downtown Sioux Falls, and they have been a staple in the building for 5 years. I couldn’t talk about Jones 421 without mentioning this gem. Their 2023 Burger Battle submission was my personal, as well as a local favorite, placing 5th out of 32!

Rounding out this marathon of a day, I’m calling in recruits (the rest of the DTSF staff) cause we’re heading to Intoxibakes. That’s right, a boozy bakery. They’ve got every flavor under the sun, including non-alcoholic options to satisfy that post- dinner sweet tooth. Female owned and operated, these ladies are pros at what they do. If sweets are not what you’re looking for, pop back over to the Source where they have a number of craft beers on tap!

Whether you’re taking a few hours to cram for your nursing exam, grabbing lunch, or celebrating with your colleagues for a job well done, you too will become a regular in no time. I’ll see you at Jones 421.

Meet Me Downtown: Greg with 605 Running

“Meet Me Downtown!” This is a common phrase heard from a friend you’re meeting for drinks, a family member about to grab lunch, your favorite shopping partner, or from a variety of other people. Now you can hear from DTSF small business owners about why you should meet them right here in downtown.  Each month we’ll help tell the stories of what makes this community so special.

Whether you’re looking for some great outdoor gear, workout accountability, or a great community of individuals, this month’s featured business is right up your alley. Meet Greg Koch with 605 Running in Downtown Sioux Falls!

Q: First, tell us your history with  605 Running Co.

Growing up in a family business certainly played a key role in my position as part owner of 605 Running Company. I always knew that I wanted to take ownership of something that I could distinctly call my own some day. I had no idea that it would be a running specialty store, but I’m not surprised that my current career is based on health and wellness. My parents are great mentors and still to this day look to them for advice and direction in the decisions that I make in business. I also enjoy being able to collaborate with them on unique projects like the Sioux Falls Skedaddle.

Q: What’s one of your favorite memories from 605 Running?

A: I have many wonderful memories from 605 Running Company, but one of my all-time favorites has got to be the video series we created to win the Salty Running Blog bracket challenge to determine the #1 running specialty store in the country. In order to win we had to earn votes from our community and we beat stores from Minneapolis, St. Louis and Rochester (NY).

Q: Where is your store located?

A: Our store is located downtown at 124 South Phillips Avenue.

Q: What’s one product you’d highly recommend to anybody who walks into your store?

A: No matter who you are, I assure you that you will love Balega Socks. They are incredible socks from a unique mission driven company with tremendous standards and business ethics.

Q: Describe your ideal day in downtown Sioux Falls.

A: My ideal day downtown would start (of course!) with a run with friends through Falls Park, probably around 5am. Next, my wife Chelsea and baby Violet would meet up with me and we’d grab breakfast at the Phillips Avenue Diner because of its proximity to my shop.

After an unreasonable amount of food and coffee we’d then visit the Washington Pavilion to play in the science center with my daughter. She is 9 months old, so of course I would be the child doing most of the playing while my wife wrangled us in.

From there we’d most likely be hungry again, so we’d visit my parents’ shop, The Cookie Jar Eatery, and double up on family time and food. After that we would buy some books, puzzles and toys at Child’s Play Toys, followed by a visit to the Great Outdoor Store–you never know what gear you need until you hang out for an excessive amount of time there.

We’d follow up with a late afternoon snack at CH Patisserie. Once all three of us were refueled with only the finest French treats we would do some more shopping at Duluth Trading Company, The Spice and Tea Exchange and Mrs. Murphy’s Irish Gifts. Finally, we’d end our perfect day downtown with supper at Mama’s Ladas.

Q: Do you have any special events or news for the upcoming year for 605 Running?

A: We have the Sioux Falls Skedaddle Half Marathon presented by Avera coming up on April 26th. Our store always offers two unique group running events every Wednesday at 6:05pm and Saturday morning at 7am. We are also working on a new collaboration with some downtown friends at 8th and railroad. That announcement is expected to be coming very soon.

Q: Describe your business in three words:

A: Reliable, Fun and Honest

Q: What makes downtown Sioux Falls different than any other downtown?

A: My favorite part of Downtown Sioux Falls and what I think makes it truly unique is the people. As I planned out my ideal day downtown, it brought to mind the unique faces and experiences associated with each business. My family and I have been able to build meaningful relationships with the people that tie downtown together. It is a very special place–so much more than shops, venues and living spaces. It is a family, enriching the lives of everyone who experiences what we have to offer.

Meet Me Downtown: Terri with Sticks and Steel

“Meet me Downtown!” This is a common phrase heard from a friend you’re meeting for drinks, a family member about to grab lunch, your favorite shopping partner, or from a variety of other people.  Well now you can hear from DTSF small business owners and why you should meet them right here in downtown.  Each month we’ll help tell the stories of what makes this community so special.  If you’re looking for a unique gift, *cough* Valentine’s Day *cough*, this month’s featured business will be a great place to look through. Meet Terri Schuver with Sticks and Steel in Downtown Sioux Falls!

Q: First off, tell us about the history of Sticks and Steel.

A: Oh, boy… Well, Sticks and Steel really started with Prairie Dance, a rusted-metal gift and décor line that started back in 1997.  I was traveling around the country selling her Prairie Dance creations at fairs and markets.  I started to take note of the unique and beautiful goods her exhibiting neighbors were selling, and thought to herself “people in Sioux Falls would so appreciate these things!”.   So I bought several pieces from some of my favorite artists and sold them out of a small store front space in front of the Prairie Dance studio and welding shop.  The “grand opening” of Sticks and Steel was in September of 2001.  Now, 19 years later, the gallery has been through half-a-dozen expansions and takes up about 2000 square feet of space.

Q: What’s one of your favorite memories from Sticks and Steel?

A: My favorite memories seem to be of the people we’ve connected with through the business.  We’ve hired workshop employees that couldn’t speak English and are now thriving American citizens as well as the dearest friends.  And we’ve come to realize that we’ve learned more from them than they will ever learn from us!  We’ve hosted a surprise engagement for an awesome guy who wanted to surprise his sweetie…..we hid the ring, chilled the champagne and cheered when he popped the question!  We’ve bonded (and sweat!) with employees and their families when everyone pitched in to paint our retail space with 20ft high ceilings.  I can’t really pick just one memory….they all make up the fabric of who Sticks and Steel is!

Q: Have you always been located in the 8th & Railroad Center on the Eastbank of downtown Sioux Falls?

A: 8th and Railroad is Sticks and Steel’s first official location.

Q: What’s one product you’d highly recommend to anybody who walks into your store?

A: Bacon Cooker!  That thing is the bomb.  It’s a beautiful piece of pottery that cooks bacon in minutes.  What more could a Midwest gal ask for?!

Q: Describe your ideal day in downtown Sioux Falls.

A: Easy! First stop, Queen City for their goat cheese quiche and tea… so amazing!  Then, of course, Sticks and Steel… chop down a few goals with my team and see all the new goodies we have coming in.  Sanaa’s Shish Tawook has my heart, so that would definitely be my lunch stop… Walk through Josephine’s for a little botanical breather before heading back to the shop.  Finally, I’d end the day at R Wine Bar for happy hour with my downtown amigos. Perfect!

Q: Do you have any special events or news for the upcoming year for Sticks and Steel?

A: We have so many events planned!  You all can count on our Annual Clearance Sale and Prairie Dance sale this spring.  We have several artist events in the books along with workshops and special shopping events too. Keep your eyes on our Instagram and Facebook page for details as we get closer to all the fun.

Q: Describe your business in three words.

A: Artful, Vibrant, Fun-loving.

Q: What makes downtown Sioux Falls different than any other downtown?

A: The community!  Our neighbors are the best.  Restaurants, retailers, hotels, we all work collaboratively with the same goal in mind—we wanna bring the fun!  We’re blessed with an amazing customer base filled with small business evangelists and we all wanna be worthy of their support and patronage and we know it takes every business in our neighborhood to make that happen.

10 Tips for the 28th Annual Parade of Lights

It’s officially Parade of Lights week and we’re bringing back these 10 tips! The 28th Annual Parade of Lights presented by First Bank & Trust is a classic downtown Sioux Falls event that’s a tradition for city locals while also bringing visitors from all over the region.  We’ve put together a list of tips that will help with the first-timer or returning parade-goers.  Come downtown this Friday, November 29 at 7:30pm and watch dazzling lights travel down historic Phillips Avenue.  Before you go, make sure to read these 10 Tips for the 28th Annual Parade of Lights.

1. Dress warm

We can’t control the weather but local weathermen are predicting a chilly Thanksgiving Thursday through Friday.  We’ll always recommend to bundle up.  Break out the coats, hats, gloves, blankets, etc. and enjoy the crisp, South Dakota weather!

2. Come early

The parade starts promptly at 7:30pm and we’re expecting a lot of people so get to downtown Sioux Falls before 7:00pm.  Keep in mind street closures begin at 6:45pm on Phillips Avenue.  There’s plenty of parking (but we’ll get to that later) with a variety of activities to do before the parade.  Do some shopping, check out Winter Wonderland, grab a drink or get a bite-to-eat in historical downtown.

3. Park in a ramp

Parking is FREE on the weekends beginning at 5:00pm on Fridays.  Of course you can park in the streets in the surrounding area but prepare to walk.  Use a downtown parking ramps or parking lots with over 2,300 spaces (compared to 1,000 street spaces) and stay close to the parade.  Find parking ramp and locations with this map.  ADA parking is available at the Commerce Center building, 200 N Phillips Avenue.

4.  Find a great viewing spot

Here’s a couple tips to ensure you’ll have a great spot to view the parade.  Refer to #2 on the list; come early to find spots along the parade route.  Travel to North Phillips Avenue to find the perfect spot; the route goes from 13th Street to 5th Street with plenty of space!  Folding chairs are allowed just be mindful of the many people standing.

5. Bring cash for hot chocolate

Local non-profits will sell hot chocolate for $2 on every block of the parade route, so bring cash and support the community!

6. Watch for the Grand Marshals and Jr. Grand Marshal

The Grand Marshal this year is Parade of Lights Grand Marshal and retired City of Sioux Falls Director of Planning and Development Mike Cooper.  The Junior Grand Marshal is Lincoln High School freshman, Katie Jensen who you may recognize as a devoted volunteer at the Washington Pavilion.  Both of these individuals are excited and have positivity impacted the city of Sioux Falls.  Our tip; give them an enthusiastic wave when you see them!

7. Pick your favorite floats

This is a record-breaking year with over 80 entries in the parade! From classic floats to new entries, keep track of your favorites to find out who will win one of six awards given away. Make sure you’re watching out for floats that participated in the holiday movie theme too! Die Hard is a Christmas movie right?

8. Attend the After Party & Award Ceremony

Warm up after the parade with FREE cookies and cider at the Parade of Lights After Party & Award Ceremony hosted by the Holiday Inn City Centre.  This event is open to the public and will feature holiday lighting, live music and a cash bar.  And speaking of awards…stick around for the Award Ceremony and to find out if your favorite floats (remember #7) won an award!

9. Be friendly

Like we said before, we’re expecting a lot of people in the downtown area Friday night.  Remember to embrace the holiday spirit and be kind while sharing the area with the community.

10 . Can’t make it?  Watch the Live Stream

In the unfortunate situation that you can’t come to the parade, watch the parade through live stream.  Go to the KELO-TV Home for the Holidays page this Friday at 7:30pm.

11. BONUS TIP: Make memories

The holidays are a chance to make memories and we’re honored you’re doing it in downtown Sioux Falls!  There’s a reason this parade has been around for 28 years and it’s because of this community coming together to celebrate.  Our tip: Take pictures and post to social media with #dtsf and #pol28!  Start (or keep making) a tradition of attending the Parade of Lights.

10 Things You Need to Know about St. Patrick’s Day in downtown Sioux Falls

The community has embraced the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and made it a tradition for those with Irish heritage and the Irish-at-heart, for the past 40 years. Here are 10 things you need to know about St. Patrick’s Day in downtown Sioux Falls!

1. The annual Sioux Falls St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the city’s longest running parade.

In 1979, the city’s matriarch Sylvia Henkin called a group of friends around her kitchen table to discuss her idea to bring a “people’s parade” to celebrate the Irish spirit in Sioux Falls. As with most things that Sylvia set her mind to, the idea quickly turned to reality. The first parade was held in 1980 in downtown Sioux Falls, and the tradition has never wavered. Take part in the city’s longest running parade and celebrate Sylvia’s legacy during the 40th Annual St. Patrick’s Day parade on March 16, 2019, starting at 2:00pm in downtown Sioux Falls. Click here for a parade map.

2. The Falls will be lit green.

Visit the city’s namesake while it’s lit green for the holiday! Falls Park Visitor Center will be open St. Patty’s Day weekend, 10:00am – 5:00pm on Saturday and Sunday.

3. Mrs. Murphy’s is the only Irish store in South Dakota.

For over 20 years, Mrs. Murphy’s Irish Gifts has been a must-see shop, selling the finest jewelry, clothing, food and gifts imported from Ireland, right here in downtown Sioux Falls.

4. Canadian Khartum Temple Pipe & Drums visit downtown every St. Patrick’s Day.

Parade founder Sylvia Henkin invited the drum group to the event in its inaugural year, and they’ve returned every year since. Here’s a sneak peek of what you can expect!

5. Watch traditional Irish dancing with the Sioux Falls Celtic Steps.

The Celtic Steps School of Irish Dance is a growing community in Sioux Falls. Seriously, two dancers went to Scotland for the World Irish Dancing Championships.  See the group dance a jig at the St. Patrick’s Day Holiday Inn party, following the parade.

6. Hugh Grogan is this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade grand marshal.

Hugh Grogan has strong Irish connections and serves as an advocate in the Sioux Falls area.  The Grogans celebrate by making a family float for the parade every year. Learn more about Grogan here.

7. Get the official St. Patrick’s Day button and support Special Olympics South Dakota.

Official buttons are not only a festive accessory, but also serve as the annual St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser.  Over $160,000 has been raised for local nonprofits from button sales. Get yours at the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce or Mrs. Murphy’s Irish Store for just $3.

8. Help paint the street green!

Every downtown St. Patrick’s Day celebration kicks off with the painting of a shamrock in the middle of historic Phillips Avenue. Beginning at 11:00am, the corner of 9th and Phillips Avenue will be covered with the classic Irish symbol.

9. Listen to traditional Irish music at the Old Courthouse Museum.

Enjoy the Dakota District Pipes & Drums and Maggie in the Meantime with food and drinks during the St. Patrick’s Celebration of Traditional Irish Music at the Old Courthouse Museum.

10 . Eat, drink and be merry at DTSF’s authentic Irish Pub.

Feast on traditional bangers and mash with a tall Guinness at Blarney Stone Pub, downtown’s only Irish pub. There will be a number of food and drink specials during the day, as well as one of the best patios in the area. Find a full list of restaurants and bars under the Dine & Drink section.
